Anabolic steroids are man-made hormones that are derived from natural steroidal compounds. These compounds have been shown to increase muscle mass and improve athletic performance. Androgens are the male sex hormones. Androgens are responsible for the development of masculine characteristics, such as facial hair, increased muscle mass, and deep voice. Testosterone is the major androgen hormone in men. Other androgens include dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Testosterone is the primary hormone responsible for increasing muscle mass and strength. Testosterone levels decrease with age, leading to decreased muscle mass and strength. Supplementing with testosterone helps to maintain muscle mass and strength.
Testosterone is converted to DHT inside the body. DHT is the active form of testosterone. Because DHT is much stronger than testosterone, it is the primary hormone responsible of developing male characteristics.
Progesterone is the female sex hormone. Progesterone is involved in regulating menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and lactation. Progesterone increases after childbirth, helping the uterus return to normal size.
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone. Glucocorticoids are steroid hormones that regulate blood sugar levels. Cortisol is released during times of stress.
Cortisol regulates the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline, chemicals that raise heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are released during times of stress and anxiety.
Cortisol helps to control inflammation. Inflammation is caused by irritation or damage to the body’s tissues. Cortisol reduces inflammation by decreasing the number of white blood cells circulating in the bloodstream.
Cortisol also controls the immune system. The immune system is the body’s defense mechanism against disease. Cortisol suppresses the immune system by reducing the production of antibodies and phagocytes.
Cortisol affects fat storage. Fat is stored in adipose tissue. Adipose tissue is located under the skin and around organs. Fat stores energy in the form of triglycerides.
