Anabolic steroids are man-made hormones that are derived from natural steroidal compounds. These compounds have been shown to increase muscle mass and improve athletic performance. Anabolic steroids are often used by athletes looking to enhance their physical appearance and performance. Steroids are not approved by the FDA for medical use, but they are commonly used by bodybuilders and professional athletes to help them achieve greater results in their workouts.
The term “steroid” comes from the Greek word stero meaning “to arrange” or “to place.” In medicine, steroids refer to any chemical substance that mimics the effects of naturally occurring sex hormones. There are many different types of steroids, including testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, cortisone, and others.
Steroids work by attaching themselves to receptors in cells throughout the body. Once attached, these receptors trigger specific cellular responses. When a person takes steroids, the body produces its own natural steroids, called endogenous steroids, to replace those taken. Endogenous steroids are produced in the adrenal glands, testicles, ovaries, pituitary gland, and brain.
There are two primary categories of steroids: anabolic and androgenic. Anabolic steroids are designed to build muscles; androgenic steroids are designed to stimulate male sexual characteristics. Both categories of steroids may cause side effects.
Anabolic steroids are synthetic versions of naturally occurring hormones. They are sometimes referred to as “performance enhancing drugs” (PEDs). Anabolic steroids are often given to people who want to gain weight or bulk up. Anabolic steroids are also used by athletes to improve their endurance, speed, strength, and power.
Androgens are the male sex hormones. Androgens are responsible for the development of masculine characteristics, such as facial hair, increased muscle mass, and deep voice. Testosterone is the major androgen hormone in men. Other androgens include dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Testosterone is the primary hormone responsible for increasing muscle mass and strength. Testosterone levels decrease with age, leading to decreased muscle mass and strength. Supplementing with testosterone helps to maintain muscle mass and strength.
Testosterone is converted to DHT inside the body. DHT is the active form of testosterone. Because DHT is much stronger than testosterone, it is the primary hormone responsible of developing male characteristics.
Progesterone is the female sex hormone. Progesterone is involved in regulating menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and lactation. Progesterone increases after childbirth, helping the uterus return to normal size.
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone. Glucocorticoids are steroid hormones that regulate blood sugar levels. Cortisol is released during times of stress.
Cortisol regulates the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline, chemicals that raise heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are released during times of stress and anxiety.
Cortisol helps to control inflammation. Inflammation is caused by irritation or damage to the body’s tissues. Cortisol reduces inflammation by decreasing the number of white blood cells circulating in the bloodstream.
Cortisol also controls the immune system. The immune system is the body’s defense mechanism against disease. Cortisol suppresses the immune system by reducing the production of antibodies and phagocytes.
Cortisol affects fat storage. Fat is stored in adipose tissue. Adipose tissue is located under the skin and around organs. Fat stores energy in the form of triglycerides.
