Steroid Peptides (SP) are a group of naturally occurring compounds that have been shown to increase the production of cannabinoids in both humans and animals.
SP’s are derived from the same precursor molecule as THC, called cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). CBGA is converted into THCA by decarboxylation, then further modified into various forms of SP’s. These SP’s are then converted back into CBGA and eventually into THC.
The first SP discovered was named “anandamide” after Ananda Mahidhar, who isolated it from the resin of the plant Cannabis sativa in 1962. There are now over 20 known SP’s that have been identified, including 2-AG, AEA, NAGly, PEA, OEA, LEA, and others.
There are two types of SP’s, those that activate cannabinoid receptors directly, and those that don’t. Those that do not bind to cannabinoid receptors are known as non-cannabinoids. Non-cannabinoids are thought to work by stimulating the release of endocannabinoids, which act as neurotransmitters in the brain. Endocannabinoids are released from the nerve cells and bind to their own receptor sites on nearby neurons. When they bind to these receptor sites, they cause the neuron to fire, thus sending signals throughout the body.
Cannabis contains many different types of SP’s, some of which are considered to be psychoactive while others are not. The most well studied SP’s are the ones that activate cannabinoid receptors, and the most potent of these are the endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids), namely anandamide and 2-AG.
Anandamide is produced in the human body and binds to the CB1 receptor, causing euphoria and relaxation. However, due to its short half-life, it only lasts for about 5 minutes. 2-AG is produced in the body and binds to the same receptor site as anandamide, but it lasts much longer than anandamide. It is believed that 2-AG may play a role in appetite regulation and pain relief.
Other SP’s that are present in cannabis include oleoylethanolamide (OEA), palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), and linoleoylethanolamide (LEA). These SP’s are also thought to bind to the CB1 receptor and are believed to help regulate mood and anxiety.
In addition to SP’s, cannabis also contains terpenes, which are responsible for the smell and flavor of cannabis. Terpenes are volatile oils that give cannabis its distinct aroma and taste. They are also responsible for the effects of cannabis.
